What is the role of Optivar eye drops?

Optivar eye drops is an efficient medicament that is used for the treatment of certain eye allergies. Optivar eye drops thus successfully treats allergic conjunctivitis that occurs in the eye. This medication helps in alleviating symptoms like itching in the eyes, burning, stinging, redness and excessive watering of the eyes. Optivar eye drops contain Azelastine as the main functional constituent.

How does Optivar eye drop works?

Azelastine Belongs to the class of antihistamines. Azelastine works by competing with histamine for h1 sites on the histamine receptor and acts an antagonist by inhibiting it. This leads to the alleviation of the allergic symptoms such as excessive watering, itching, and redness due to activation of mast cells thereby treating allergic conjunctivitis.

What is the dosing regimen or method of using Optivar eye drops?

Optivar eye drops are commercially available in the dosing strengths of 0.05%w/v. to treat conjunctivitis make sure your hands are clean first, then pull the lower eyelid and make a pouch, now put 1-2 drops of Optivar in the eyes and close the eyes for 15 seconds. Repeat the same procedure in the other eye as well. Do not put more than the prescribed amount and avoid contact with other parts such as nose and mouth.

What are the contraindications to the use of Optivar eye drops?

• Do not use Optivar eye drops in case you are allergic to any of the ingredient present in this medication.
• Do not use Optivar eye drops in case you are suffering from any eye disorders such as open angle glaucoma or uveitis.
• In the presence of any eye injuries such or eye surgery then using Optivar eye drops is inadvisable.

What are the adverse effects seen with the use of Optivar eye drops?

The commonly observed adverse effects of Optivar eye drops are blurring of vision, bitter taste in the mouth, mild headache, burning and stinging sensation in the eye, and feeling of having something in your eyes.

What are the safety measures seen with the use of Optivar eye drops?

• Driving and performing visually challenging tasks is prohibited while using Optivar eye drops.
• Remove the contact lenses before using Optivar eye drops
• Wait for at least 15 minutes before reinserting the contact lenses while using Optivar eye drops.
• Do not change or stop the dosing of Optivar eye drops without consulting your doctor first.
• Pregnant women and lactating mothers are advised not to use Optivar eye drops.
• A person below the age of 18 years should never use Optivar eye drops without consulting his or her doctor first.
