Glucovance is the oral drug used, along with diet and exercise to help lower blood-sugar levels in type II diabetes. Diabetes is a condition in which pancreas not able to yield insulin and cell develops resistance to insulin. It mainly happened in 35 years of age, mainly due to overweight. Diabetic patient generally has repeated thirst, hunger and urination fatigue. It leads to kidney failure, cardiovascular disease, stroke and coma. It is recommended to take this medicine in a day just before the food at time same time.

Glucovance contains a combination of glyburide and metformin.Glyburide, a sulfonylurea, helps to lower blood glucose by stimulating theβ -cell of pancreas to secrete insulin. Metformin, a biguanide, works by declining gluconeogenesis and intestinal glucose absorption, as well as enhancing the cell sensitivity towards insulin.

Why to take Glucovance?

  • It is used when treatment with either metformin, or a sulfonylurea medicine are not sufficient to control your blood glucose  along with diet, exercise
  • It is used to replace the intake of two drug metformin and a sulfonylurea to control blood sugar level.


The use of this drug in contraindicated in certain conditions

  • In case of any allergy to metformin hydrochloride, glyburide
  • In case of type I diabetes mellitus
  • In case  if you are pregnant or breast feeding
  • Not recommended for children or adolescents.

 Drug interaction

Avoid intake of certain drugs while taking this drug.

  • Avoid intake of miconazole either orally or as a mouth gel combination may cause an excessive fall in blood glucose level.
  • Avoid intake of NSAIDs such as aspirin
  • Avoid intake of ACE inhibitors such as captopril, enalapril, and their combination can result in erratic drop in blood sugar.
  • Avoid intake of sulfinpyrazone, sulphonamide, antibiotics such as  sulfamethoxazole, co-trimoxazole
  • Avoid intake of coumarin anticoagulants such as warfarin.
  • Avoid intake of MAOI antidepressants, such as  phenelzine, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine


  • Store at room temperature (25 degrees C).
  • Store away from direct heat, moisture, and light.
  • Keep away from the reach of children and away from pets.


The usual starting dose is one Glucovance tablet once a day. Take Glucovance immediately before your meal at the same time

What to do in case of missed dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you recall. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing program. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

What to do in case of overdose?

Overdose symptoms include tired, sick, vomit, have trouble breathing, stomach pain or diarrhea unusual muscle pain, avoid overdose of it.

Side effects

Some unwanted side effects include nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, dizziness. SomeSerious Side Effects dark stools, Darkcolored urine, Fever, Pain in stomach, Chest pain,bleeding. Sore throatswelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, or throatRash, Yellowing of the eyes or skin.


  • Avoid intake of alcohol while taking this drug it may leads to decrease in blood sugar.
  • Don’t share your drug with others.
  • Do not skip meals while taking Glucovance.
