Cosopt eye drops contains a combination of dorzolamide ophthalmic(for the eyes) reduces the amount of fluid the eye, which decreases pressure in the eye. The drug timolol ophthalmic is a beta-blocker that also reduces pressure inside the eye.

The drug Cosopt is comprised of two components: dorzolamide hydrochloride and timolol maleate. These components decreases elevated intraocular pressure, by reducing aqueous humor secretion. The intraocular pressure is a major risk factor in pathogenesis of optic nerve damage and glaucomatous visual field loss. The higher the level of intraocular pressure, greater the glaucomatous field loss and optic nerve damage.


The dose is one drop of Cosopt in the affected eye two times daily.

Method of administration:

Tilted the head back slightly and pull down lower eyelid to create a small pocket. The dropper is holded above the eye with the tip down. Look up and away from the dropper and squeeze out a drop.The eyes are closed for 2 to 3 minutes with the head tipped down, without blinking or squinting. The finger is pressed gently to the inside corner of the eye for about 1 minute and to keep the liquid from draining into your tear duct.


Cosopt is used to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure inside the eye.


The drug is strictly contraindicated in the following cases:

COSOPT is contraindicated in patients with bronchial asthma, a history of bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sinus bradycardia, atrioventricular block, and cardiogenic shock.

Drug interactions:

Some of the drug interactions shown by the medication are as follows:

  • Cosopt interact with carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. So simultaneous use is not recommended.
  • Cosopt shows interaction with acid-base disturbances, bets-adrenergic blocking agents
  • Caution should be used in co-administration of beta-adrenergic blocking agents such as COSOPT and oral or intravenous calcium antagonists because of possible atrioventricular conduction disturbances.


Some of the precautionary measures that are to be taken into account while using this drug are:

  • The drug cosopt should not be used if the person is allergic to the drug.
  • If the patient faces a history of asthma problems.
  • If a person has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  • If a person faces serious heart problem

Side effects:The common side effects of the drug are:

  • Swelling or redness of your eyelids.
  • Eye redness, pain, discomfort, sensitivity to light
  • Drainage, crusting or oozing of the eyes.
  • Wheezing, gasping or breathing problems.
  • Swelling and rapid weight gain
  • Feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion


Overdosing should not be done. In case if symptoms of overdosing appear, visit to the nearest hospital.

Missed dose:

If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remember. But if the time of next dose has been achieved, skip the missed dose and follow the regular dosing schedule.

Storage conditions:

The drug should be stored at room temperature. It should be kept away from children and pets.
